The Galaxy S24 Ultra will go on sale with a starting price of RM 6,299 up to RM 7,799.

If you watched the Galaxy Unpacked, you will notice that Samsung started with all its AI features followed by its new hardware. Why? The Samsung Galaxy S24 series is the company’s first Galaxy AI and focuses more on delivering better user experience. More on the AI later.

Here are my first looks at the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and a full review coming up next.

You will find many similarities compared to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra I reviewed last year. The same boxy shape design accommodates the S Pen, the same button positions as well as four protruding camera bumps.

What’s new here is the introduction of a flat display which I’m a huge fan of. I can now apply tempered glass. Aside from that, Samsung also joined the Titanium choice of material for its frame. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra didn’t get a leap weight markdown by dressing with Titanium material. Matter of fact, it only weighs 1 gram lighter compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but when I picked up the device for the first time, I somehow felt it’s evident lighter. This is probably due to well-distributed weight or probably just me.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra gets a more resilient Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Armor, exclusive to Galaxy S24 Ultra. It’s not only 4 times more screen scratch-resistant, but it also reduces glare by up to 75%.

It comes in 4 color options; Titanium Black, Titanium Gray, Titanium Violet, and Titanium Yellow There are also 3 vibrant colors which are Samsung Online Exclusive; Titanium Green, Titanium Orange, and Titanium Blue.

Flat Display

To have a high screen-to-body ratio, Samsung took the curved screen approach to create a more immersive viewing experience but, it come at a cost. It’s a lot more fragile, has accidental touches, displays distortion, and is not stylus-friendly.

With the technology advancement, Samsung switches back to a flat display without sacrificing much screen estate by having narrow and symmetrical bezels.

Sporting the same 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X LTPO 2.0 (1 – 120Hz Adaptive refresh rate) and pushes QHD+ resolution.

The panel now outputs up to 2,600 nits peak of brightness and features Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 fingerprint scanner under the display.

Equipped just like last year’s excellent Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra except for the new 50-megapixels telephoto camera, which now gets 5x optical zoom instead of 10x optical zoom but with a 10-megapixels sensor. Samsung claims this configuration not only gets sharp 50-megapixels photos with 5x zoom but also gives you a 10x lossless zoom that uses a crop of the 50-megapixel sensor’s 5x zoom.

The rest were a 200-megapixels f/1.7 0.6μm primary camera with OIS, a 12-megapixels f/2.2 1.4μm ultrawide lens, and a 10-megapixels f/2.4 1.12μm 3x optical zoom with OIS.

Powering the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy instills its advanced AI capabilities to deliver new experiences with AI features. Eg: Chat Assist, Live Translate, Circle to Search, Transcript Assist, and Generative Edit.

Paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and speedy UFS 4.0 storage with up to 1TB.

Galaxy AI

Here comes the center stage of this device, the Galaxy AI. There are a lot of AI integration natively on the software.

  • Chat Assist: Modify the tone, translate, or spell-check text messages before sending.
  • Live Translate: Translate calls in 13 languages during a conversation.
  • Transcript Assist: Provide transcriptions and summarize conversations in Samsung’s recording app.
  • Note Assist: Summarize, translate, and format files in Samsung’s Notes app; generate digital covers for notes.
  • Circle to Search: Launch a Google search for any object in a photo by circling it.
  • Generative Edit: Manipulate and move objects in photos, similar to Google’s Magic Editor.
  • Instant Slow-mo: Turn regular videos into professional slow-mo videos by tap-and-hold the video playback.

I got to try it out during the Samsung media briefing and they worked seamlessly. Of course, the tests were in Samsung’s controlled demo. Will share more in real-life tests in my full review.
