[REVIEW] Samsung Galaxy A54 5G – The Most Premium Galaxy A-series

Looks like Samsung is streamlining its Galaxy A-series lineup by skipping the Samsung Galaxy A74 5G and having the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G to fill both market segments.

Design

Samsung is never shy of using plastic for its midrange devices to cut down its cost while differentiating from its flagship smartphones. The Galaxy A54 5G has broken the chain by offering Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and back cover.

On the rear side, you will find a huge similarity to the flagship Samsung Galaxy S23 lineup which features IP67 water and dust protection.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Selfie Camera

Flipping to the front you will notice a fair big bezel, especially the chin. The Infinitiy-O or center hole punch cutout for the selfie camera still has an awkward silver trim that doesn’t blend well with the beautiful Super AMOLED display. This serves as a reminder that this is still a midrange device.

Display & Sound

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G features a 6.4-inch SuperAMOLED with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. It has the same 2,340 x 1,080 resolution but the new display gets brighter. The panel boasted up to 1,000 nits from 800 nits plus with the Samsung Vision Booster, which increases visibility under bright sunlight without degrading its color output.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Display

Overall, the display is rich and vibrant, and the 120Hz refresh rate keeps things smooth and jitter-free.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Fingerprint Scanner

Under the display is an optical fingerprint scanner that’s fast and accurate. It’s just that it’s positioned pretty odd and it’s not ergonomic.

The beautiful display is complemented by excellent stereo dual speakers that support Dolby Atmos. It is as good as you get on Samsung’s flagship smartphone.

Performance

Powering the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is the Samsung Exynos 1380 fabricated on a 5nm process. It’s a huge upgrade from its predecessor, which boosts double the number of high-performance cores and more GPU Execution Units (EU).

This provides better gaming performance and smooth everyday tasks. As usual, I ran three rounds of the same benchmark tests to see any significant heat generated that potentially throttled the performance.

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G AnTuTu

From the test above, I find the temperature control is impressively good and maintained its performance. It can even run high graphics demands games like Asphalt 9: Legends in high settings without any issue. As for the Genshin Impact, I would need to set it to medium graphics settings.

There is 5G support, Wi-Fi 6, and NFC for Samsung Pay and other applications.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Camera

Instead of having a quad rear camera, the new Samsung Galaxy A54 5G now has just a triple rear camera system. Samsung has axed the depth sensor that serves no purpose. Equipped with a new 50MP 1/1.56″ sensor size primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture and Optical Image Stabilisation. Samsung didn’t disclose which sensor it uses but it does match the Samsung GN3 that is found on the Samsung Galaxy S23/S23+.

Alongside is a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide with a fixed focus camera and a 5MP macro lens which I rather use the primary camera to do a close-up shot.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is also capable to record 4K video at 30 frames per second.

OneUI 5.1

Samsung Galaxy A54 5G OneUI 5.1

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is shipped with Samsung OneUI 5.1 based on Android 13. It will also receive the same software updates treatment as the flagship Galaxy S23 series; 4 years of major OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates. Meaning this device will stay updated with Android 17 and security protection till 2028.

Battery Life & Charging

The Exynos 1380 is quite a power-efficient chip and based on my PC Mark Work 3.0 battery life, it scored shy of 13 hours which is quite decent for a midrange device.

The 5,000 mAh battery supports 25W PD fast charge. No Qi Wireless charge is supported here.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is available now for only RM 1,899 and you will receive a 1-year extended warranty, a FREE silicon cover, and receive an additional rebate of RM 150 when you trade in your old device on the Samsung E-Store.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is one reliable phone that will stay relevant with good software support for the next few years. Samsung has significantly refined its build and hardware which close up the gap with its flagship device.

Of course, there are a lot of Chinese brands alternative at this price point but there aren’t many that can offer great software and support as Samsung did.
