Samsung updated its Galaxy A-series 2023 lineup and introduced 4 new devices; Samsung Galaxy A04, Samsung Galaxy A14, Samsung Galaxy A34 5G, and the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G which we just received from Samsung Malaysia for review. This will be a first impression and the full review will come next.
Normally Samsung would launch its Galaxy A7X alongside the Galaxy A3X and Galaxy A5X. It seems that Samsung will skip the Galaxy A74 5G and probably have the Galaxy A54 5G to fill both segments.
Adopted the same Galaxy S23 series design with a more minimalist back cover and individual camera bumps.
The rounded plastic frame has some curves to it that create a streamlined flow between the front 6.4-inch display and the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 back cover.
The power and volume rocker are positioned on the right, while the hybrid dual SIM card tray is at the top. The USB C and down-firing speaker are found at the bottom. Supports stereo dual speakers with Dolby Atmos support.
It’s IP67 dust and water-resistant and the display is guarded with Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
Since the Galaxy A-series is targeted at energetic and youth audiences, the Galaxy A54 5G is offered in four colors; Awesome Lime, Awesome Graphite, Awesome Violet, and Awesome White.
Oddly enough, the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G sports a smaller 6.4-inch SuperAMOLED that is smaller than the Galaxy A34 5G at 6.6-inch. The panel features Full HD+ (2,340 x 1,080) and an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate.
Boasts up to 1,000 nits peak brightness and also features Vision Booster that increases visibility under bright sunlight.
The Galaxy A54 5G gets an optical in-display fingerprint scanner that’s accurate and fast.
The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 1380 fabricated on a 5nm process. It’s definitely an upgrade with a more powerful CPU and GPU compared to the Exynos 1280 that powered the Galaxy A53.
Paired with one configuration for Malaysia’s market; 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage that can further expand with a microSD card.
It is also equipped with the latest Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3.
Offered triple rear camera setup; a new 50-megapixels f/1.8 primary camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), a 12-megapixels f/2.2 fixed-focus ultrawide, and a 5-megapixels macro lens.
Meanwhile, the center hole punch cutout is a 32-megapixels f/2.2 aperture with a 1/1.8″ sensor size. It still has the awkward silver trim around the camera.
The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is capable of recording up to 4K at 30 fps. More on the camera performance and photo samples in my review.
Shipped with the latest OneUI 5.1 based on Android 13 and receive the same software updates treatment as the flagship Galaxy S23 series; 4 years of major OS upgrade (Android 17) and 5 years of security updates.
Battery & Charging
There’s no battery upgrade compared to its predecessor, a 5,000 mAh battery which the company claims to provide up to two days of use. It supports up to 25W fast charge, and a 30-minute quick charge that can replenish up to 50%.
Power brick included and it only comes with a USB C to USB C charging cable.
Price & Availability
The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is available now for RM 1,899. Currently, Samsung Malaysia is accepting trade-in on Samsung’s E-Store and offering a free Galaxy Buds Live worth RM 549 plus a 1-year extended warranty
