[REVIEW] Vivo V3Max. High Performer Mid-range Smartphone

Vivo’s latest mid ranger, Vivo V3Max is one of the deal breaker smartphone in the market offering an impressive specification yet at affordable price point. V3Max is the first smartphone in Malaysia that powered with Qualcomm Snapdragon 652, an Octa-core SoC that coupled with Adreno 510 GPU.

We were manage to get a review unit of the device and do find below the unboxing video and full review.

Our first impression of the Vivo V3Max is it very resembling with the Apple iPhone 6 design and even user-interface which not necessary a bad thing. It has a premium curves unibody aluminum body built and design and sports a bright 5.5-inch IPS Full HD display.

The display looks very good, providing good viewing angles and great color brightness. The brightness output is surprisingly good and readable under sunlight.

Despite it powered with a mid-range SoC, Qualcomm Snapdragon 652, the V3Max is a great performer and with the 4GB of RAM, I did find it perform buttery-smooth. There are no lagging when launching apps and loading games. It really able to delivery the advertised slogan “Faster than Faster” where vivo focus in providing faster performance experience.

Did runs the AnTuTu’s benchmark test, surprisingly it scored 82,500 point placed it top of some 2015’s flagship SoC like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808, 810, Huawei Kirin 950 and even Samsung Exynos 7420.

Storage wise, it packed with a 32GB onboard storage and supported microSD card storage expansion via second SIM slot.

Here are some close up photos of the V3Max;

Power and volume rocker buttons on the right;

Bottom facing speaker, microUSB, microphone and three capacitive keys. Did find out a bit odds that the three capacitive are not illuminated.

I did find the speaker playback is very loud and solid with very low distortion even at the highest volume.

On top front is an 8 megapixel front facing camera, earpiece speaker and ambient light sensor.

On the rear is the 13 megapixel with PDAF, single LED flash and below it is the 360-degree fingerprint scanner and top you will find the 3.5mm audio jack port.

The rear camera performed quite good by producing good color reproduction and wider dynamic range in good lighting conditions. Unfortunately, the performance dropped a lot under low-light and appear with noises and distortion.

The fingerprint sensor is lightning fast, its offers device unlock in less than a second.

The Vivo V3Max support dual 4G, dual standby. The second SIM slot is a hybrid slot that service either SIM2 or microSD card slot for storage expansion.

To keep the lights on, it packed with a 3,000 mAh battery and supported Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0. It also offers two hours of music playback from just a five minutes of charging. During my test, it able to last me a full day use with almost 6 hours of screen-on-time.

Out-of-box it comes with a fast charger that support output of 5V, 2A and max 9V, 2A.

Vivo are very thoughtful to bundle along with a high quality transparent TPU case and pre-installed tempered glass on the device. I believe this is the first device offers so.

Aside that, it also comes with an OTG cable where you can connect your flash drive to transfer your files or plug with your input peripherals like keyboard and mouse.

The V3Max runs on its custom software that look very similar to iOS, FunTouch OS v2.6 on top of Android 5.1 Lollipop. Unfortunately there were no update till now although Andorid 6.0 Marshmallow has released three quarters and Android 7.0 Nougat is on it way.

FunTouch OS did bring few handful apps like S Capture, smart split, customizable theme and more.

Overall it has a good design and build quality, powerful mid-range processor and impressively fast and accurate fingerprint reader. The built-in speaker is remarkable good and has dedicated audio chip for better audio experience.

The downside is poor low-light camera performance and slow Android OS update

The Vivo V3Max is selling for RM 1,399 nationwide in Malaysia and comes two color options; Gold and Rose Gold.
