[REVIEW] Phidisk WrathKeeper & PhantomKnight SATA III SSD

You may have not heard of this brand Phidisk that focuses only on memory technology. They have 2.5″ SSD, M.2, mSATA, Flash Card and OTG. They are actually a local brand from the island of Penang, Malaysia.

Phidisk uses its own Phison’s core technology in NAND-flash controller and supplies its products locally and internationally.

Phidisk has provided us with two of their mainstream SSDs for us to review; Phidisk WrathKeeper and Phidisk PhantomKnight. Both are 2.5″ SSD III and the different are the NAND flash and warranty;

Phidisk WrathKeeper

  • Capacity: 120GB
  • Interface: SATA III up-to 6Gbps
  • Form Factor: 2.5″
  • Controller: Phison S11
  • DRAM Cache: 32GB SRAM Controller
  • NAND: 3D TLC
  • Read/Write: 570MBps / 500MBps (120GB)
  • Read/Write: 570MBps / 540MBps (240GB,480GB & 960GB)
  • Warranty: 5 Years

Phidisk PhantomKnight

  • Capacity: 480GB
  • Interface: SATA III up-to 6Gbps
  • Form Factor: 2.5″
  • Controller: Phison S11
  • DRAM Cache: 32GB SRAM Controller
  • NAND: TLC
  • Read/Write: 520MBps / 430MBps (120GB & 240GB)
  • Read/Write: 540MBps / 450MBps (480GB & 960GB)
  • Warranty: 3 Years

3D NAND vs NAND

What’s the difference between NAND/2D NAND comparing to 3D NAND. 3D NAND or Vertical NAND (V-NAND) uses a stacked architecture to arrange the memory cells within the SSD instead on a flat arrangement on the 2D NAND.

With 3D NAND technology, the storage can be greatly increased without the need to shrink the cells. This also boosts reliability and provide faster performance especially in 4K IOPS. How? It would consume lesser power thus it gave a longer lifespan.

That’s why you would see the different on speeds and warranty between the Phidisk PhantomKnight and Phidisk WrathKeeper.

Is 2D NAND Still Relevant?

Not to say that 2D NAND is not reliable and poorer performance. Capacity and price to take into consideration when choosing an SSD. If you are not heavy workload in continues reading or writing on SSD, the 2D NAND is more than enough.

You may get better price/GB and the higher capacity has better performance in reading/writing speeds so you can install more games onto it and store more media.

Important of DRAM

There are very cheap SSD out there that they don’t mention anything about DRAM. The DRAM is a controller-based solution that caches the most frequently accessed data onto lower latency SSD that dynamically accelerate system performance. Thus you will get generally 35% faster compared to DRAM-less SSD.

Performance

We did the usual performance test with the CrystalDiskMark benchmark test and we found that the reading speeds between are pretty close where the writing PhantomKnight faster because it’s a larger SSD use more channel in parallel. In fact, the Phidisk PhantomKnight performance better than written on its spec sheet.

Phidisk WrathKeeper vs Phidisk PhantomKnight

The PhantomKnight is the best bet entry-level SSD for those who want bigger storage for gaming and media without burning your pocket. Whereas the WrathKeeper offers one of the cheapest 3D NAND SSD and peace of mind 5 years warranty.
