ASUS Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip Announced – Here’s What You Need to Know

ASUS has just unveiled its latest Zenfone 8-series smartphone, there are only two of them; the ASUS Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip. There’s no Zenfone 8 mini as speculated instead the compact size smartphone is theirs flagship.

It has been a while since Android phone makers release a compact or a one-handed use flagship smartphone. This time ASUS took a different approach by unveiling a “Super-compact” 5.9-inch Zenfone 8 flagship device and of course paired with the latest yet powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G mobile processor. The only 8.9mm thickness and 148mm x 68.5mm dimension packed with a 4,000mAh battery and a headphone jack. Yes! A 3.5mm audio jack which others said no space for it.

It doesn’t stop there, the compact size Zenfone 8 is offered with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1. There’s a lot of power and performance packed in this tiny device.

The Zenfone 8 sports a 5.9-inch Samsung AMOLED display with 20:9 aspect ratio, 120Hz refresh rate and 240 touch sampling rate. The custom panel offers a max peak brightness of 1,100 nits, 112% DCI-P3 colour gamut, Delta E<1 colour accuracy, 1 millions : 1 contrast ratio and protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

ASUS offered one of the best camera setups IMHO without any redundant macro or depth sensor. It equipped with an SONY IMX686 64-megapixels 1/1.7″ large sensor with f/1.8 aperture and 4-axis optical image stabilization. Paired with a SONY IMX363 12-megapixels dual-pixels image sensor that does autofocus and supports 4cm macro shot. This is what I call less is more. All the cameras do 4K recording at 60fps and the main camera can shoot up to 8K video at 24fps with EIS and OIS. As for the punch-hole front camera, it features a SONY IMX663 12-megapixels dual-pixels images sensor that also does autofocus and 76.5-degree field-of-view.

It has all the in-display fingerprint scanner, the latest Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, Qualcomm aptX, aptX HD and aptX Adaptive.

The ASUS Zenfone 8 Flip design is pretty much identical to the ASUS Zenfone 7 which didn’t manage to reach our shore. Nevertheless, it still packed with flagship hardware including Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G mobile processor paired with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB or 256GB UFS 3.1 storage.

The notch-less/punch-hole-less 6.67-inch display is from Samsung as well. A Full HD+ resolution with 92% screen-to-body ratio, 90Hz refresh rate, 200Hz touch-sampling and impressively fast 1ms response time. It also certified with 110% DCI-P3 colour gamut, Delta E<1 colour accuracy, 1 millions : 1 contrast ratio and 1,000 nits max peak brightness. The display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 6.

The motorized flip-up module camera offers the same high-resolution photo and video capability whether the module is front-facing or rear-facing. It equipped with same SONY camera sensors with the Zenfone 8 plus an 8-megapixels telephoto that does 3x optical or 12x digital zoom.

The ASUS Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip will be priced from €599 onwards and €799 respectively.

ASUS Malaysia has confirmed the launch in the Malaysian market very soon. This is one exciting device that I would like to review especially the super-compact Zenfone 8. The Zenfone 8 Flip could be one of the best devices for vlogging.
