From Fold to Featherlight: The Evolution of the Galaxy Z Fold Series

Unveiled on 9th July at Galaxy Unpacked 2025 in New York, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is Samsung’s slimmest and most refined foldable smartphone to date, featuring a folded thickness of just 8.9 mm and an unfolded thickness of 4.2 mm. This makes it 48 percent thinner than the original Galaxy Fold launched in 2019 and marks a significant 26 percent reduction in thickness over the past year alone.

Samsung’s journey toward this achievement began with the original Galaxy Fold, which introduced the world to foldable smartphones. Over six generations, the company has continually innovated its hinge engineering, progressing from the Hideaway Hinge to the Flex Hinge and now to the new Armor FlexHinge. This cutting-edge hinge offers superior durability while enabling a more compact and streamlined design.

The Galaxy Z Fold7 not only improves on thickness but also enhances usability. It features a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8.0-inch main display, offering an 11 percent larger screen area than the Galaxy Z Fold6 for a more immersive viewing and multitasking experience.

Each generation of the Galaxy Z Fold series has advanced the foldable category, from the S Pen support and water resistance of the Z Fold3 to the Flex Hinge innovation in the Z Fold5. Now, with the Galaxy Z Fold7, Samsung continues to lead in both design and functionality, setting a new standard for what foldable smartphones can offer.
